Environment Secretary Owen Paterson made no attempt to meet the Independent Expert Panel after its critical report on the badger culls, a briefing for MPs was told.
Professor Tim Coulson, a professor of zoology at Oxford University who sat on the panel, accused Mr Paterson of “playing politics” with wildlife protection, as the war of words continued over how to best tackle the spread of bovine tuberculosis.
The academic made the comments at a meeting called by the Badger Trust and Care for the Wild in order to update supporters on a legal challenge to the culls, which was granted permission by a judge last week.
The wildlife charities believe culling is ineffective in reducing the spread of bovine TB and will argue that resuming free shooting would be illegal without independent monitoring.
